Germany calls for tougher sanctions against Iran's drone technology

Apr 16, 2024

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called on the European Union to strengthen sanctions against Iran's unmanned aerial vehicles after a massive attack on Israel.

The German minister's statement was quoted by DW.

The EU imposed the sanctions in December in response to Iran's production of drones used by Russia in the war in Ukraine.

"At the end of autumn, together with France and other EU partners, I advocated that this sanctions regime on unmanned aerial vehicles should be expanded... I hope that we can now finally take this step together," Burbock said.

The German foreign minister also added that she would travel to Israel to discuss ways to de-escalate the situation.

Last weekend, Iran launched a large-scale attack on Israel in response to an Israeli strike on 1 April, which destroyed Iran's diplomatic mission in Damascus and killed Iranian generals.
