Apr 16, 2024

The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Iran's ambassador over the recent air attack against Israel and the seizure of the Portuguese-flagged container ship MSC Aries by its forces near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, this was reported by the country's Foreign Ministry.

The statement said that the ministry demanded the release of the Portuguese-flagged vessel, which was seized by Iran on 13 April.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded the release of the crew, who must receive proper treatment while the ship remains under arrest, as it found the explanations provided so far inconsistent.

"The Foreign Ministry will await the outcome of this formal event and assess further steps accordingly," the statement said after the meeting.

On Monday, Tehran said that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had seized a cargo ship allegedly belonging to Israel in the Strait of Hormuz for "violating maritime law," Reuters reported.
