Borrell: EU countries agree to extend sanctions against Iran

Apr 16, 2024

At a meeting on 16 April, EU foreign ministers agreed to extend the sanctions regime related to Iran's military assistance to Russia in connection with recent events in the Middle East.

According to Yevropeiska Pravda, this was announced at a press conference by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

According to Borrell, the European Union plans to expand the sanctions regime imposed in July 2023 in connection with Iran's supply of drones to Russia in two directions.

"(The first direction - Ed.) is the direction of the type of weapon to include the possibility of sanctions for the provision of missiles, not just drones. There is currently no evidence that Iran has provided missiles to Russia to attack Ukraine, but we can expand this regime to include this possibility," he said.

The second direction, according to Borrell, is related to "expanding the regional dimension of the sanctions framework so that it can be applied to supplies from Iran to forces it controls in the Middle East," particularly in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria.
