Negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU should begin before the June European Parliament elections. This will send the right signal to citizens.

This was stated by MEP Viola von Cramon-Taubadel in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.

"I would say that we insist on this very much, because Ukraine has clearly fulfilled all the criteria. And it is in our interest to finish as much as possible before the European elections," she said.

At the same time, the MEP noted that Hungary's upcoming presidency of the EU Council from July 1 "may not be inclined" to start negotiations.

"So, we need to make it either before the European elections, which would be perfect, or before July 1. This will give the government and the negotiators, and especially the citizens, the right signal that we are serious about the accession negotiations and that this is not an empty promise. And I think it is now up to us, the European Council," Viola von Cramon-Taubadel added.

Last December, at a summit in Brussels, the leaders of the European Union member states approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. The European Commission has already approved the negotiation framework for Ukraine's accession to the EU.
