Germany wants to speed up arms purchases as part of defence reforms

Mar 28, 2024

German Minister of Economy and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has made it clear that Berlin plans to speed up the approval of arms purchases and provide greater certainty in planning large contracts.

This was reported by Bloomberg.

Habeck noted that the approval processes for arms purchases are often too long, so they need to be accelerated, and the rules for dual-use goods that can be used for both military and civilian purposes will be reviewed.

"If we look at Russia, against this threatening backdrop, we must ensure that we increase the production of goods that enhance the country's security capabilities," he said after meeting with representatives of the German defense and security industry.

According to him, the situation with global threats has changed, so "it would be naive not to think about it".

Habeck also said he was working on alternative funds when the €100bn German special fund, 80% of which has already been budgeted, runs out to allow companies to plan larger arms orders.
