Macron admits Putin's participation in G-20 meeting

Mar 29, 2024

French President Emmanuel Macron has allowed Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to attend the G-20 leaders' meeting in Brazil in November if it is "useful," but noted that all G-20 members should support the dictator's invitation.

This was reported by the French media outlet rfi.

At a joint press conference with the President of France in Brazil, which will preside over the G-20, President Lula da Silva said that he intends to send an invitation to Putin.

He did not rule out the possibility that Putin could be arrested in Brazil.

"I am not the one who decides this, it is up to the courts, and the president (of Brazil - ed.) does not evaluate court decisions. He either complies with them or not... If he (Putin - ed.) comes, he knows what will happen," Lula da Silva said.

Macron categorically stated that the invitation of the Russian dictator to the G20 summit should be a matter of consensus in the club.

"The importance of this club is that it must agree with the other 19, and this will be the work of Brazilian diplomacy," Macron said.

If this meeting can be "useful, we have to do it," but "if it creates a split, undoubtedly," it should not happen, he added.

As a reminder, in March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The warrant was also issued in the name of the Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova.
