Macron traveling to Brazil to seek progress on Ukraine

Mar 26, 2024

On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron begins a three-day visit to Brazil, where the main issue on his agenda will be an attempt to persuade his Brazilian counterpart Lula da Silva to take a stand on Russia's war against Ukraine.

French officials told Bloomberg on condition of anonymity.

According to the officials, the French leader is betting that his differences with Lula over Russia's invasion of Ukraine can be reduced, although Brazil believes that both sides share the blame for the war.

Lula has repeatedly rejected the idea of arming Ukraine, arguing that the US and EU strategy undermines the prospect of a negotiated end to the war.

Brazil's position largely resonates with the so-called Global South, which includes non-Western countries with emerging economies.
