Poland: NATO does not rule out shooting down Russian missiles

Mar 26, 2024

NATO does not rule out the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles when they approach the airspace of member countries. The Alliance takes the threats of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin very seriously.

This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland Andrzej Szejna, according to the Polish media outlet RMF24.

He admitted that the issue of shooting down missiles flying towards the territory of the North Atlantic Alliance is being considered.

"Various concepts are being analyzed within NATO, including the possibility of shooting down such missiles when they are very close to the NATO border - but this would have to be done with the consent of the Ukrainian side and taking into account international consequences - then NATO missiles would hit Russian missiles outside the territory of the Treaty (Alliance - ed.)," the diplomat said.

According to him, the aggressor cannot impose any rules on us every time, but rather must get used to the fact that the NATO side, the side of democratic countries, and the EU will start setting a certain tone when it comes to resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

"We take Putin's threats very seriously. He has shown that he is capable of anything. What it (Russia - ed.) has achieved, besides hundreds of thousands of wounded and dead on both sides, is that Sweden and Finland have joined NATO. We have another NATO summit in July. We have the consolidation of the EU countries, the reactivation of the Weimar Triangle," Szejna noted.

As a reminder, a Russian missile landed in Poland during a strike on Ukraine on March 24. As a result, the air force, including NATO aircraft, was sent up in the sky. The Russian missile stayed in Polish airspace for 39 seconds.

Later, however, Poland said that the military knew that the missile that flew over the Lublin region would return to Ukraine. In addition, the Polish Ministry of Defense clarified that they were ready to shoot down the Russian missile if it had flown deep into the country's territory rather than returning to Ukrainian airspace.
