"In the last 48 hours, it was decided to double our contribution to the Czech initiative," he said.

Speaking to journalists in Riga along with his Latvian counterpart Krisjanis Karins, Sikorski refused to name a specific amount of funding.

Ammunition is now one of the main needs of Ukrainian defenders, as its use allows them to deter the offensive of the Russian occupiers.

Earlier, Czech President Petr Pavel said that Prague had found about 800,000 rounds of ammunition that could be transferred to Ukraine outside the EU. But the supplies require funding.

A number of Western countries have already announced that they are joining the Czech initiative. They have allocated funds for the purchase of shells.
