This is reported by RBC-Ukraine regarding the report of the UN Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine.

The 38th report of the UN mission on the situation with human rights in Ukraine covers the period from December 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024. Experts conducted interviews with 60 Ukrainian military personnel recently released from captivity.

The Ukrainian military spoke about the terrible treatment of prisoners by the occupiers, the impossibility of communicating with families, and the lack of adequate food and medical care.

In particular, the Russian military and officials torture prisoners, including beatings, and electric shocks, forcing them to stay in an uncomfortable position for a long time, threatening to shoot them or simulating them. More than half of the prisoners experienced sexual violence.

The authors of the report note that these data confirm that the Russian army continues to apply previously established practices of torture, ill-treatment, deaths in captivity, incommunicado detention, enforced disappearances, and appalling detention conditions.

"Furthermore, the OHCHR has documented credible reports of the execution of at least 32 Ukrainian prisoners of war in 12 separate cases between December 2023 and February 2024, significantly more than in any previous period. The OHCHR has independently verified three of the cases.", the report says.

The UN also cites data on interviews with 44 Russian prisoners of war who, although they do not claim torture in official detention facilities, gave "testimonies of torture and ill-treatment in their temporary accommodation after evacuation from the battlefield."

In addition, the mission report contains information about the violence of the Russian administration against the residents of the occupied territories of Ukraine. This includes killings of civilians, arbitrary detentions, and restrictions on freedom of expression.

According to the UN, the total number of established civilian casualties in Ukraine "remains comparable to the number of casualties in the previous period."
