Russian dictator Vladimir Putin wants to regain control of the Kursk region by January 20. That is, before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to The Telegraph.
The publication notes that Putin has sent 50,000 Russian and North Korean soldiers to try to recapture the Kursk region from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. NATO allies believe that the Russian dictator hopes to regain the territory before Trump's inauguration.
According to British military intelligence, Russia is likely to intensify its kamikaze drone attacks on Ukrainian positions in the coming days, using new launch sites near the border.
About 12,000 North Korean conscripts are also likely to be involved in the fighting in the Kursk region under the mutual military assistance pact between Russia and the DPRK signed this year.
According to Ukrainian analysts, the Kremlin may also use its largest counterattack in Kursk Oblast to gain momentum and advance into Sumy Oblast.
As of now, Russia has regained about half of the territory that the Ukrainian Armed Forces seized during the operation launched in August.
In turn, Western diplomats are concerned that Putin will try to quickly seize the territory before Trump's inauguration, thus giving Russia more power in any peace talks.
The Telegraph added that after launching a counteroffensive in the Kursk region, Russia intensified attacks on the front line. In particular, in October, Russian troops occupied more territory in Ukraine than in any month since mid-2022.
